Should school uniforms be required in public schools? It will increase education, and decrease on violence and the cost will be lowered. This is a question that has created debates in several different schools. Some say that school uniforms represent discipline and obedience while others say not wearing uniforms takes away from the children’s creativity and individuality. Not only does wearing uniforms teach obedience and discipline it also helps students to focus and have better grades and it cuts cost on parents. Will wearing uniforms improve education in schools? Yes wearing uniforms does improve on education. By having students wear uniforms they are more focused on their studies than what someone else has on. It has caused a less distraction because when you have students that are wearing all the new name brand clothing students are found in the classroom admiring the other peers clothes and shoes instead of focusing in the class room. So by wearing the uniforms they all have on the same thing and allow the students to focus and pay more attention in class which helps these students get better grades. When it comes to education, clothes are not quite important. According to (Thomas, S) â€Å"studies show wearing uniforms help the educational environment. It only shows unity within the student-body but as well helps students concentrate in class.† Do uniforms cut down on conflict in schools? I believe uniforms do cut down on conflict in schools. It cuts down on the competition with others in schools. Less fighting and more discipline. For instance High school and middle school students have it the worse it could be stressful trying to get all the credits you need to graduate. This is the age were they experience name brand clothing, shoes, also were the most bulling and violence comes in from gang’s and other different things. Being bullied by your appearance can be a bit overbearing. During my research I found that in the late 90’s(Pickles, L, P.) the focus of uniforms was called to action for intercity schools were violence was happing in for several differen t reasons from theft to gangs and cliques. I remember when I was in middle school and high school before uniforms were implemented there was a big issue with gangs if you wore the wrong color  (red or Blue) you were approached by these members. So going to uniforms were they all having the same color top and bottoms solved a lot of that violence. Then there comes the bulling and teasing of other students who are less fortunate than others. Students can be mean and messes with another student’s self-confidence because they are in a household were they have to wear hand me downs or parents can’t afford the latest brands of clothing. So by wearing uniform everyone looks alike and there is no reason for the bullying. Do uniforms cut down cost? Uniforms indeed cut down cost for families. Instead of parents having to go out and buy $50.00 pair of jeans and yes that is for one pair. Most stores have bundle sales on school uniforms. What you paid for one pair of jeans can buy you 2 uniform bottoms and 2 uniform tops a nd some places 3 or 4. Only expensive thing you worry about is shoes. Uniforms are much less expensive than traditional clothing worn by teens. Some schools provide programs where kids can receive the uniforms at little or no cost. I remember my daughter went on a filed a trip when she got home from the field trip she had a be brown paper bag in the bag was 2 uniform pants 2 shirts, a sweater, socks, a pack of underwear and many more things that were given to her in this program that was offered in her school. So there is help to get uniforms at little to no cost were you can’t get that help with regular clothing for school. By allowing school uniforms in the school, education will improve student’s success. It will enforce discipline towards learning. There will be less violence, Peer Pressure will reduce because there will be less distraction on what everyone else has on. However some people feel that wearing the uniforms takes away from a student’s individuality students are still encouraged to be creative. Students tend to alter their uniform with jewelry. But we have to remember the most important thing school is a place for our children to learn not to flaunt wealth and fashion. We have to decide as a society if individual expression is more important than an improved violent free educational performance. EU and NAFTA: On Human Rights Essay

The European Union (EU) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has had several initiatives that address human rights issues. These initiatives obligate and mandate its signatories and the member states to follow particular rules regarding human rights. In terms of influence, varying levels of success can be noted. The human right action done by both organizations is notable, although the level of success is arguable, as there are criticisms to implementation and scope of these programs. Also, there are still existing issues on human rights that has yet been addressed and influenced by these international organizations. European Union The European Union has human rights as one of its priorities, as it conducts dialogues and coordinates with other countries and international organization. In fact, the EU has institutionalized the focus and prioritization of the issue by establishing the European Court of Human Rights which was founded as product of the European Convention on Human Rights. This court has resolved some very notable cases, and until now serves as a mechanism and agency to promote human rights and prosecute its violators. The Human Rights Watch notes however that some anti-terrorism strategies has resulted in some human rights violations in the EU, as laws protecting human rights have been weakened. Also, the EU policy on migration and refugees altogether prevents asylum seekers and refugees, even deporting them back to the home country. This is a strong indication that the EU has not perfected its human rights strategy by neglecting these issues, even detaining migrants, as Human Rights Watch notes. Individual EU members also committed human rights violations with regards to the policy of refugees and migration. The NAFTA has had initiatives and agreements that address some human rights concerns, but it has gathered criticisms on its inability to effectively implement the provisions. Also, the need to balance trade and human rights is emphasized as one of the lacking values of the organization. Some human rights initiative of the NAFTA has proven to be not very successful; as impressive as the texts of the agreement are, the implementation falls short of expectations and has had disappointing results. For instance the Human Rights Watch notes that the NAFTA Labor Accord was ineffective, and that its results should serve as lesson for future trade agreements. This labor accord – the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation – was supposed to harmonize trade relations and labor rights, but this agreement has not elicited any results. Labor rights protection should be part and parcel of any trade agreement, but not one of the complaints of abuse and injustice has been addressed by the NAFTA initiative. The FIDH Report on the effects on human rights of the NAFTA also notes that although the organization promoted stronger economic links between United States and Mexico, it has essentially dismantled Mexico’s agricultural industry and made it dependent on the US. This has impacted negatively on the situation of Mexico, with increased poverty as result of NAFTA initiatives. Labor law reforms, as was mentioned above, also have to be considered to prevent abuse of human rights. Conclusion The European Union and the North American Free Trade Agreement are not devoid of concern for human rights issues, but the existing and past initiatives has to be reinforced in order to effectively influence its member states and the human rights situation.

Kant Moral Law Theory Essay â€Å"Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe the oftener and more steadily we reflect on them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me. † – Kant (1788), pp, 193, 259 Immanuel Kant introduced and initiated his ‘moral law theory’ in the late 18th century. The doctrine in question sought to establish and constitute a supreme or absolute principle of morality. Kant disputes the existence of an ‘ethical system’, whereby moral obligations are obligations of ‘purpose’ or ‘reason’. The accuracy of actions [i. e. the rightness or wrongness of an individual deed] is determined by its configuration and conformity with regard to ‘moral law’. Evidently, according to Kant, an immoral transaction is invariably contemplated as an illogical or unreasonable occurrence or action. The supreme moral principle is a consistent working criterion that proves to be practically helpful and theoretically enlightening when used by rational agents as a guide for making personal choices (Kant VI). A supreme guiding moral principle must carry with it an absolute necessity and be done out of duty to the moral law in order to be free from corruption. Kant believed in a fair and impartial law. He accredited and affirmed the presence of an objective moral law that we, as humans, were/are able to identify with through the process of reasoning. Kant argued that we are able to recognise and distinguish moral law, without making reference to the possible consequence or outcome. Immanuel Kant declared a differentiation between statements [i.e. posteriori and priori] that he believed to coincide with moral law. A posteriori statement is one that is based on experience of the material world. In opposition, a priori statement requires no such knowledge; it is known independent of the phenomenal world. Furthermore, Kant continued to make additional distinctions with regard to analytic and synthetic statements. An analytic statement, he claims, is one that by its very nature is necessarily true, as the predicate is included within the definition of the subject. Example: – [â€Å"all squares have four sides†]. The previous statement is of an analytic nature, as the predicate, i. e. the square having four sides, is implicit and is part of the definition of the subject – [â€Å"square†]. An analytic statement is necessarily true – true by its own authority, and is purely explicative, as it tells us nothing new about the subject. In contrast, a synthetic statement is one in which the predicate is not included in the definition of the subject, and thus is not necessarily true. A synthetic statement also tells us something new about the subject. Prior to Kant, it was widely accepted that there were only two types of statement: a priori analytic and a posteriori synthetic. Kant accepted these two statements although believed there to be a third: a priori synthetic statement. These are statements that are known independent of experience that may or may not be true. Kant claimed that these priori synthetic principles are inherent within us and therefore subsequently form the basis of all moral decision making. Kant’s theory is based on and is primarily concerned with the aspect of ‘duty’. Kant believed and promoted the notion that to act morally is one’s ‘duty’, and one’s ‘duty’ is to act and proceed in accordance to the principles of moral law. Due to this, Kant’s theory is categorised and distinguished as a ‘deontological argument’. A deontological theory is one that maintains the moral rightness or wrongness of an action and depends on its fundamental qualities, and is independent of the nature of its consequence – â€Å"Duty for duty’s sake†. This perspective can be viewed in contrast to the beliefs and ‘rules’ associated and belonging to teleological arguments, i. e. utilitarianism. Immanuel Kant argued that moral requirements are based on a standard of rationality he dubbed the â€Å"Categorical Imperative. The categorical imperative has derived from the initial belief and notion that humans base their moral judgment on pure reason alone. This view can be viewed in contrast to a ‘morality theory’, which assumed/s that human’s actions are guided by emotions or desires. However, such narratives motivate only if they are regarded in some sense as true. The question is, in what sense? Not in an objectivist sense (e.g. von Ranke), since value-even if intrinsic-is a subject related reality. Not in an idealist sense (e.g. Cassirer), since they respect the autonomy of reality. Nor in a "depth" sense of expressing an alleged "essential condition of guilt" (e.g. Heidegger and Patocka), since this would remain a positivist description, albeit one level removed. Instead, I propose treating nature myths as orienting the world (e.g. Jaspers) and guiding human components therein. As such, nature myths can be said to be tr ue (as in Ricoeur’s "adamic" myth) or false (as in the myth of "Man the Master") inasmuch as they provide or fail to provide adequate guidance for sustainable coexistence with all of the Earth. The purpose of this paper is to ask in what sense, if any, ecological nature myths can be said to be not only ennobling and moving, but also in some significant sense true, able to claim a validity independent of the assent of those who tell and hear them. I wish to use the term myth rather broadly to indicate not only the alleged spontaneous outpourings from the depth of our psyche, dear to romantically inclined philosophers and psychologists, but rather all narratives which describe the cosmos and the place of humans therein in terms of relations of value and meaning rather than in terms of mathematico-causal relations in spacetime.
